Amazon proposes drones-only airspace for delivery

It is known to all that Amazon has had a keen interest in delivering packages via drones. Taking a step further, the company has unveiled a proposal to designate a portion of the airspace above suburbs and cities for drone delivery.

Drone based delivery

The company unveiled a proposal which suggests that high-speed drones be limited to an area covering a height of 200 to 400 feet off the ground. Another 100-foot area above this space would be regarded as a no-fly zone ‘to act as a buffer against other traditional aircraft.’

A report by The Wall Street Journal points out that the Amazon proposal is part of a broader push to develop automated systems so as to maintain ‘order among the growing number of drones zipping around US skies. ‘

The company unveiled the plans at the NASA UTM Convention in California, and included five features for drones that would be able to fly in the zone. Amazon’s vision for the future also incorporates much of a NASA plan for an automated drone-traffic management system. This project is said to have more than 100 other collaborators which include Google and Verizon Communications as well.
